They are remaking Child's Play. You know that movie that caused a lot of controversy in Britain during the mid 90's and the film series in which the Daily Mail apparently help ban. The Child's Play series is frequently repeated on ITV4. The first film was on last night, the second film was on during the weekend and The Bride Of Chucky was on last month.
Watching the first Child's Play again I noticed a glaring error in the plot which wasn't on the list of already many errors on the IMDb website. When Barcley brings Andy back the police station she tells him to go bed. After she discovers that the Good Guy Doll is in fact 'alive' and she runs out of the flat leaving her 7 year old son alone to chase Chucky out in New York at night, we then see that Andy is now in a prison. I'm also confused by the fact that he appears to be remanded among adult criminals. Another thing that confuses is the fact that Andy hasn't been proven to be responsible. Maggie's death could have been an intruder whilst Eddie died because the gas was left on in his squat and he fired a bullet.
I also thought that although the first half hour of the film was tense and gripping, but after Bacley leaves her son on his own whilst he ends up in an adult prison, the whole film falls apart.
The theme of Child's Play was originally written to demonstrate the affects of advertising on kids. Cabbage Patch Dolls were cited as an influence. This is an interesting theme to explore but I think the original did not succeed in portraying. I do hope the remake can fulfill this. Although most remakes tend to fall short of the original film David Cronnenberg's 80's remake of The Fly far surpasses the 50's original and I do hope Child's Play also succeeds where the first film failed.
